World marathon record-holder Kelvin Kiptum has died alongside his coach in a road traffic accident on Sunday (11 February).
Kiptum and his Rwandese coach, Gervais Hakizimana, passed away on the spot Sunday night after losing control of his car while driving along the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road a few hours before midnight, police say.
“The accident happened around 11 pm. The car had three occupants; two died on the spot while one was taken to hospital,” Elgeyo Marakwet County Commander Peter Mulinge said.
Adding, “This was a self-involved accident where one Kelvin Kiptum, the world marathon record holder, was driving his vehicle with two passengers.”
The survivor is receiving treatment at Racecourse Hospital in Eldoret as Hakizimana’s wife, Joan Chelimo, confirmed the death of her husband to Olympics.com.
Kelvin Kiptum’s death comes just less than a week after his marathon world record was ratified by World Athletics.
The 24-year-old star, who won the London Marathon in April before setting the world record in Chicago in October, was one of the most exciting new prospects to emerge in road running in recent years, especially after clocking 2:01:53 to win his debut marathon in Valencia in December 2022.
He had been named in Kenya’s team for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and was to team up with Eliud Kipchoge, considered the greatest marathoner of all time.
Kiptum was also set to participate in the NN Rotterdam Marathon scheduled for the first weekend of April on the 13th and 14th Sunday.

How many students are at Kaimosi Friends University?

Kenya may be facing an acute police officer shortage after the National Police Service (NPS) failed to recruit new officers last year in 2023 in what the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kithure Kindiki said was due to lateness.
“We shall be conducting the recruitment early next year…we cannot have it this year. We are late.” He said in October last year.
In April 2023, the Kenya Police was to enlist new law enforcement professionals in a planned countrywide recruitment drive that was later rescheduled for 2024 due to budgetary constraints, amongst other challenges.
At that time, Inspector General (IG) Japhet Koome was against the postponement, admitting that the NPS needed to maintain its staffing levels to reduce violent crime and promote overall public safety and community trust.
“Myself, I cannot see recruiting in 2024. How can I do that with the shortfall I have?” the Inspector General had complained.
So the question is, when is the police recruitment in 2024? Well, the National Police Service of Kenya has not yet communicated the actual date even after recently flagging a social media post that claimed that the police recruitment was to be last month in January.
“We wish to inform the public to disregard the fake news circulating on social media platforms regarding the purported recruitment into the National Police Service in January 2024,” NPS stated in an official statement. Hence, the specific date and time remain unknown.
When it happens, the NPS will no longer recruit people who are above 18 years old but 21 in line with the new recommendations set out by the task force on police reforms led by former Chief Justice David Maraga, which also raised the minimum KCSE grade to join Kenya Police from D+ to C-.
