NTSA has introduced the smart driving license to replace the older version (red booklet). This small card contains a chip with all the driver’s information, such as name, blood group, gender and date of birth. Additionally, thanks to the introduction of the demerit point system, traffic police can easily fine rogue drivers.

To apply for the smart driving licence, you must be registered on the TIMs portal. Additionally, you need at least Kshs 3,100 in your M-Pesa account and have your phone with you since you will need it to access your account. If you have that sorted out, follow the following prompts.

  • Log into your TIMs account. An OTP code will be sent to your phone, which you will use to access your account.
  • Once in, click on ‘driving license’ and proceed to’ apply for smart driving license’ on the drop-down menu.
  • Fill in the required information correctly and click next.
  • Make the payment and click complete.
  • You will be redirected to the invoice page, which you can download.
  • Go back to the main menu and book an appointment with NTSA. Green means the date is available, while red means you should pick another date.
  • NTSA will collect your biometrics and personal data.
  • Once your Ntsa smart DL is ready, you will receive a text.

Replace a lost birth certificate in Kenya via Huduma Centre

  1. Visit Huduma Centre and bring a copy of the birth notification.
  2. Fill in the application form (form B1) and submit it together with the original birth notification, original IDs, and passports of both parents and their copies. It would help if you also had the birth certificates of both parents. If one or both parents are deceased, please carry the death certificate(s) with you.
  3. Pay the required fee, which ranges between Kshs 50-180.
  4. Wait for a notification from the civil registry.

  1. Create an E-citizen account if you do not have one yet and log in.
  2. Head on to the civil registration department and click on get service.
  3. Click on make application choose birth certificate, then follow the prompts.
  4. Pay Kshs. 180 via Mpesa using the pay bill and account given.
  5. Once the payment is processed, submit the application and download the invoice generated.
  6. Submit the invoice at the Civil Registration offices and wait for the notification.

As the name suggests, GMOs (Genetically modified orgasms) are genetically engineered plants. The process mainly starts with identifying the genetic information or gene of the organism that gives it a unique trait—then copying that information and inserting it in the DNA of another organism to produce a new organism. Below is a brief explanation of how GMOs are made.

Step 1: Identifying
The scientists must first identify the desired traits they want in the new plant. These could be drought, herbicide or insect resistance. The next step involves looking for an organism, say an insect, animal or microorganism, that possesses these traits in its genes. For example, they might want an insect-resistant crop to minimize the need for spraying insecticides. In this case, the gene in question would be Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis).

Step 2: Copying that information
The team will then copy that desired trait.

Step 3: Inserting the DNA

The scientists will insert the gene into the plant’s DNA using special tools. The rest of the plant’s traits usually remain intact.

Step 4: Growing the Plant
The plant with the new gene will now be left in the lab to grow and adapt the desired traits. If this works, the scientists will first grow the new plant before moving it to small fields before finally giving the go-ahead to plant it in large quantities. This is usually after a series of reviews and safety tests.

That is all about how to make GMO plants. The four processes usually take several years before the plant is introduced into the market.
