Once you have a learner permit, the Provisional Driving License (PDL),
after completing your driver’s education course in a driving school, you must pass an NTSA road test exam to get your driver’s license in Kenya.
The NTSA Exam is a general name meant to describe a written test, multiple-choice test, and practicals that one must take before getting a driving license. It is a test booking for class endorsement in the driving license.
These exams are administered by driving test examiners (DTE) from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), whose mission is to provide safe and efficient movement of pedestrians, goods, and vehicular traffic on Kenyan roads and highways by registering and licensing motor vehicles, conducting motor vehicle inspection and certification, regulating public service vehicles (PSVs), which are part of its mandate.
NTSA exam practice tips
The following steps will maximize your exam success chances:
* Obtain study materials such as test guides and practice tests that can help you understand the theoretical background and format of NTSA exams.
* Practice sample questions to familiarize yourself with the questions you will encounter on the actual exam. The most tested areas include knowledge of the rules of the road in general, road signals and signs, authorized road or highway codes, and physical fitness to drive a motor vehicle of the class for which the license shall be issued.
* Learn test-taking strategies that will help you manage your time within the time limit of your NTSA test and solve questions quickly.
How you can apply for an NTSA exam
If you have a driver’s education completion certificate from an NTSA-recognized driving school or hold a PDL and have completed certification of supervised driving, you can apply for your exam online, and you will take it from your nearest Driving Test Unit (DTU).
To book your NTSA driving test online,
1. Visit www.ntsa.go.ke and go to
Online Services menu
2. Click on ‘Driver Testing and Licensing’
3. Sign in using your E-Citizen account
4. Click ‘Test Booking‘ and give the required info
5. Make payment
6. Select the preferred date for the NTSA exams
7. Visit the preferred test center and take the test
The charge for NTSA test booking is Ksh1,050, and you will get your results the same day after doing the exams.
When you pass the driving test, you will get a certificate of competence (C of C) indicating the class or classes of motor vehicle you are permitted to drive. The C of C is valid for three (3) months, and after expiry, it will be at the discretion of the licensing officer to decide whether you will undergo another driving test or proceed with the application, payment, and acquisition of the Kenyan driving license.
