To cushion the impact of blowing petroleum prices linked to the international market, President William Ruto’s government announced Monday a countermeasure, fuel subsidies, in a major shift to shield households, businesses, and other consumers from price shocks that have proved unmanageable in the trying economic moments.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) unveiled the measure saying that without the intervention of the previously done away fuel subsidies, consumers would pay a price of more than Ksh200 per liter of petrol, Ksh183.26 for diesel, and kerosene at Ksh175.22 for a group that is already suffering from high levels of unemployment and other uncertainties.
“In order to cushion consumers from the spike in pump prices as a consequence of the increased landed costs, the government has opted to stabilize pump prices for the August-September pricing cycle,” a statement from EPRA reads.
However, despite the launch of the subsidy program, the prices of fuel in Kenya remain unchanged at Ksh194.68 (petrol), Ksh179.67 (diesel), and Ksh169.48 (kerosene) in Nairobi for the months of August-September.
In Mombasa, motorists will cash out Ksh191.62 for petrol, Ksh176.63 for a litre of diesel, and Ksh166.43 for kerosene, while in Nakuru, they will pay Ksh193.77, Ksh179.14, and Ksh168.99 for a litre of petrol, diesel, and kerosene, respectively.
In the frontiers of Northern Kenya, consumers will be hit extra hard in the pocket as they will not be spared in the latest EPRA review. With reluctant generosity, the people of Mandera will buy a litre of petrol at Ksh208.68, diesel at Ksh193.67, and Ksh183.49 for Kerosene, a bit higher than their counterparts in Moyale, who will pay Ksh204.81, Ksh189.80, and Ksh179.60 for the same, meaning that the Kenyan govt has subsidized petrol for Ksh7.33, diesel for Ksh3.59 and kerosene for Ksh5.74 from Tuesday and these areas do not benefit because of expensive overland transit and wage gaps.
The good news is that EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo has encouraged Kenyans to feel protected despite many of them grumbling about the recently imposed President Ruto’s Finance Act 2023, blaming it for the rising cost of living.
President Ruto had managed to hold down the fuel subsidy program for nearly three months from May 14 after shelving it due to the new International Monetary Fund financing policy, which roughly demands that, as an African country, remove fuel subsidies and adopt green energy to get a penny from us.
While Mpesa transfer is, without doubt, one of the most convenient ways of settling bills and making regular payments and purchases for many Kenyans, there are Mpesa account limits of which customers should be aware, especially after its recent review, announced on August 14, 2023.
Effective to all customers from August 15, Safaricom PLC has raised Mpesa account limits to Ksh500,000 after winning a gesture of approval from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the supervisor and regulator of banks and other important financial institutions, in this case, Mpesa.
The new threshold, up from Ksh300,000, is expected to reshape the payments landscape by creating new use cases as well as expanding the existing ones, particularly for vendor and supplier payments for businesses.
“The increased account limits will provide customers and especially small businesses with increased convenience as the share of cashless transactions continues to rise,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said while announcing the changes.

However, despite the shift of Mpesa limits from Ksh300K to Ksh500K, the amount you can transfer at one moment still stands at Ksh150,000, meaning that to take advantage of the expanded limit, you will have to send Ksh150,000 thrice to amount of Ksh450,000 and move the remaining amount separately to hit the Ksh500,000 cap.
Why does Mpesa Have limits?
The biggest mobile operator and the proprietor of Mpesa, Safaricom PLC, impose limitations on amounts you can transact on the faster payment method for security reasons.
It is not that Safaricom’s Mpesa wing lacks enough money to distribute to customers at any given time, but because it operates under the National Payment System Act, among other monetary handling laws by the Central Bank of Kenya, it must adhere to the set per-day limits of Ksh500,000 to help deter those seeking to abuse financial systems by laundering criminal proceeds and disguising it as legitimate income.
Also, Mpesa limits are a critical protective tool. Imagine someone accessed your Safaricom SIM Card and Mpesa PIN, then you had over a million shillings in your savings account, and Mpesa had no limits. The criminal could easily suck your accounts dry by tap pap, just the way you like it.
Further, transaction and account limits help CBK control the amount of money in circulation in the economy.
How much money can you withdraw from a Mpesa agent at one time?
With respect to the unchanged Mpesa transaction value, the amount of money you can withdraw instantaneously at a Mpesa agent or an outlet is Ksh150,000. But after the upward review of Mpesa’s holding balance from Ksh300,000 to Ksh500,000, you can repeatedly make Ksh150K transactions to attain the new limit.
Has the new Ksh500,000 Mpesa limit affected transaction costs?
No. Because you cannot withdraw Ksh500k at a Mpesa agent, Safaricom has not changed its tariffs or tuned its transaction bands to reflect the same. Mpesa customers will still use the current Mpesa Tariff 2023, the latest upon the enactment of the Finance Act.

What to know before going to the KDF recruitment exercise 2023
The Kenya Defence Forces will be signing up recruits, both men and women, for ten days from August 28 to September 8, 2023. The Army is an equal employer, but there are a set of special requirements to meet before joining the KDF.
Here are the requirements for joining the Armed Forces of Kenya. Ensure you achieve eligibility before visiting your nearest recruitment center;
* Citizenship Requirements: You must be a Kenyan Citizen and a holder of a National ID. Take four copies of the Identity Card, alongside the original one, to the recruitment center on the definite date
* Education Standards: You must have scored a minimum of D Plain in KCSE to qualify for the Army as a Service Member. For General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets and Specialist officers, it is a mean grade of B and C+, respectively, and a post-secondary education minimum. Have with you relevant academic certificates on the day of KDF recruitment in your center
* Age Limits: Be 18-26 years old for GSO Cadets and General Duty Recruits, 30 years and below for Specialist Officers, and not above 39 years of age for Chaplains and Imams
* Your criminal records must be clean
Further, because of the rigorous military training before getting enlisted, KDF Recruitment Team must asses your physical abilities and performance. What are the KDF physical fitness requirements?
* Body Height: To be considered as a possible Army recruit, you must be standing at a minimum height of 1.60m (5ft 3in) if you are a male and 1.52m (5ft) for females
* Body Weight: The minimum weight for men is 54.55 kg, and if you are a female, you should weigh not less than 50.00 Kg
* Body Mass Index (BMI) of below 30. To get your BMI, take your weight in kilograms and divide it by the square of your height in meters
* Pregnant female KDF job seekers are not permitted in the exercise
* You must not have any tattoos on your skin

GOtv payment methods in Kenya
GOtv offers convenient payment methods for seamless streaming. You may pay for GOtv subscription using MyGOtv App, credit cards, directly from banking apps from banks like Faulu, DTB, I&M, Co-op, CBA, and KCB, among others, and Mpesa, whereby using online banking entails a simple process of just clicking on the already integrated GOtv payment service, entering your IUC number, followed by the amount and PIN to complete the payment.

7. Enter your Mpesa PIN to complete the payment
You will receive an SMS confirming the payment made for the GOtv subscription. Consecutively, Multichoice Kenya will message you with further transaction and package details pertaining to your GOtv account. Ensure your recorder is on when making payments.
How do I pay for GOtv using Equity Bank USSD?
1. Dial *247# from your SIM card used to register your Equity Bank Account
2. Select ‘Pay Bill’
3. Choose to enter the business number and type 423655
4. Enter your GOtv IUC number as the account number
5. Enter the amount of your desired package
6. Select the account to pay from
7. Enter your mobile banking PIN to complete the payment
In about a minute or so, you will receive a message confirming the payment made. Alternatively, Co-operative Bank customers can pay for their GOtv packages in Kenya by dialing *667#, selecting Payments, then Utility Payments, then Pay Tv, choosing GOtv, entering the IUC number and amount, followed by PIN to verify the transaction. For KCB Bank, paying for GOtv is possible through *522# and following the prompts.

Coughing up a few francs here and there as a transaction charge when withdrawing money at MTN Rwanda outlets spread in the country is what many MoMo customers have made peace with, but I don’t know if you are one of them.
Since 1998, MTN Rwandacell PLC has been creating and delivering the best connectivity experiences for seamless communication in Rwanda while addressing the digital divide through various solutions like device financing that enables one to get a smartphone and pay in installments. That is the new customer base after the largest telecom operator in Rwanda recorded a 6% year-over-year growth in the latest half-year financial report of the period ended June 30, which was released on August 3. Winning the jackpot or a maximum payout wager is the dream of many Kenyans, precisely the 34% daily bettors of the nearly 84% who have ever played the odds at least once in their lives, according to research by GeoPoll. For some people, the problems have just begun. One story of Mathew Kipleting is nothing short of emotional and eye-opening. Kipleting cashed out the first Ksh300K and sent it to his mother. At this time, he had already hit the limit and had to wait until the next day to make another cash-out. He was now staking Ksh130,000 for a single bet and lost Ksh260,000 in two slips near-instantaneously.

An American court in the County of El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday, handed a death sentence to a man convicted of murdering Sheriff Deputy Peter Herrera in 2019.
Facundo Chavez was sentenced to death after admitting to firing 15 shots at the traffic cop and deserting him to his fate on March 22, 2019, at around 1:50 a.m., in the 1000 block of Chicken Ranch Road, San Elizario area.
“I shot Deputy Herrera. I beat him with a gun,” Chavez testified twice in his trials, as the prosecution showed footage of Herrera laying in his pool of blood to the jury of nine women and three men who heard the case.
The 32-year-old Chavez was with his girlfriend, Arlene Piña, when Herrera flagged his car for traffic violations, failing to dim high-beam headlights and improperly displaying a temporary license plate permit. It is then that he stopped, got out of the car, pulled the handgun, and shot at the officer, who was taken to Del Sol Medical Center for critical care but succumbed after two days.
The couple fled the scene but was arrested days later in their hideout by US Border Patrol agents. After several court hearings, Piña was subject to charges of capital murder but got a plea deal with El Paso District Attorney Yvonne Rosales, reducing the leveled offense to manslaughter. She is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence.
Now, the panel of judges led by Judge Diane Navarrete found Chavez guilty of capital murder on August 3. And in a deliberation that took nearly 10 hours of two days, he will be put to death, but the execution date is not yet announced.
Chavez had no visible reaction when Judge Navarrete read the verdict.
