How to Remove Dial Tone

A dial tone is the sound produced when a dial pad is pressed, and a dial pad is where the 123# numbers are located on your phone or where you usually go when you want to make a call.

When you buy a new mobile device, either of Android or iPhone OS, you will find the dial pad already pre-installed as one of the most basic phone applications (it is actually called ‘Phone’ on many phones) because, without it, you cannot make a call or ask for phone balances, or make other USSD requests as in mobile payments like Mpesa.

However, hitting this dial pad when the dial tone is on can be irritating as it produces a high-pitched sound. It can be worse when you must dial the USSD or phone numbers repetitively. So, how can you turn off the dial tone in your phone?

How to turn off dial tone on Android

This works for most Android phones like Redmi, Tecno, Samsung, Nokia, Huawei, OnePlus, Vivo and others. It is pretty a straightforward process…

1. On your phone, access the dial pad application or Phone app
2. In the first face of the app, click the menu – the three dots arranged vertically, like this︙, near the Search Contact area and then go to ‘Settings’
3. In the opened Settings options, navigate to ‘sounds and vibrations’
4. Then to ‘Additional settings’
5. You will see Dial pad tones. Put them off

In this section, you can also turn off the screen locking sound, charging sounds and vibration, and other touch sounds.

Additionally, you can just go directly to the Settings app on your phone > Search settings – ‘Dial’ > Dial pad tones and switch them off. Easy.

How to turn off dial tone on iPhone

You can get rid of the annoying dial tones on your iPhone by following this simple guide;

1. Go to the iPhone settings
2. Open the ‘Sound & Haptics’ option
3. Then scroll down to Keyboard Feedback
4. Turn off ‘Sound’

By doing this, you have removed the dial tones on your iPhone.

Breaking: Fire at Gikomba Market in Nairobi (VIDEO)

A fire broke out again in Gikomba Market in Nairobi on early Friday morning at around 03:00 hours and is not yet under control.

In a video seen by this journalist, Gikomba, one of the city’s largest outdoor markets with a warren of wooden stalls selling all kinds of goods from clothes, food, spices, and household items, is ripped by fire and smoke and flames rise from a row of stores.

There are no fire engines at the scene, and not many small business traders, who own the stock that is being engulfed in flames are trying to battle the blaze using water, trying to rescue their goods. Check the video;

The last time Gikomba was on fire was September 2023, but the worst was in December last year when traders lost goods worth Ksh2.4 million. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja had promised to set up a fire station at the market to tame the recurrent fires.

However, he had complained that land grabbers were a headache and prevented this would-be solution: “Gikomba is public land, and we will build a wall around it. It belongs to the people of Nairobi. We will defend it to the end from grabbers,” he said.

Eliud Kipchoge to Receive Honorary Doctorate From JKUAT

Eliud Kipchoge is set to receive an honorary degree from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and will add a second title of “doctor.”

Kipchoge will get an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters and will deliver acceptance remarks upon conferment as well as address the school’s class of 2023 and the crowds that will attend its 41st graduation ceremony today, on December 1, 2023, at Juja Main Campus.

Jomo Kenyatta University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, will present this honoris causa saying, “I admit you to the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters and by my authority, and that of the entire University, give the power to read and to do all that appertains to this degree” after the greatest marathoner of all time impressively satisfied all the preconditions of the prestigious accolade.

Honoris causa is an academic award presented without years of focused study and examinations, and JKUAT is giving it to Kipchoge for his great private charitable commitment through his Eliud Kipchoge Foundation, whose main purpose is to help more children get access to quality education and environmental protection.

“I want those children to grow up into healthy adults in a green and breathing world where forests keep our people safe. I hope to contribute to and grow the movement in education and environmental protection through my Foundation, to reach the people in the world with my voice. To raise awareness and to raise finances to build libraries, schools, and forests. I was lucky in my life to have access to books and knowledge from a young age. It taught me to value life.” Kipchoge says.

The institution also recognizes his outstanding achievements in athletics, especially after setting an impossible standard when he transcended human capabilities to be the fastest marathon runner alive to achieve a 1:59:40 in a sub-two-hour marathon held in the city of Vienna, Austria, in 2019 – the INEOS 1:59 Challenge.

This is the second honorary doctorate for the 39-year-old 2x Olympic champion after he was conferred with a Doctor of Science by Laikipia University during its 7th graduation ceremony in 2019.

Keeping up with developments in the mobile phone industry and generally tech space can be hard at times and maybe most times. It can be due to the vigor and rapidness of technological advancements in relation to the foregoing time and price.

It is tricky. But phones have formed a part of our daily lives other than being the primary driver of basic communication – social media and networking – and it is not only that.

People also use cell phones to listen to music, watch videos, access other downloaded files and media, learn, take pictures, and as a money-generating device, as in blogging and vlogging.

For these, leading mobile phone manufacturers like Apple, Nokia, China’s Huawei, Samsung, and Redmi phone maker Xiaomi, among other consumer electronics companies, are pushing their limits to invent smart devices that embody life-changing innovations and intelligence that meet customers’ needs.

There are many things to consider before shopping for a cell phone: brand, size, battery type and capacity, camera, RAM and ROM, charging port, and others. But the more advanced a phone is, the more it is expensive.

Swift Codes for Top Banks in South Africa

SWIFT is a global messaging standard for banks across the world for secure and reliable cross-border payments and international money transfers.

Before sending money to South Africa from a foreign country, you need to know the correct SWIFT code for the recipient’s bank account to guarantee the success of the transfer.

SWIFT codes are a combination of eight to 11 alphanumeric characters developed by the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) to phase out the old telex service or telegraphic transfer, which was slow, costly, and vulnerable to fraud.

Although major South African banks like Standard Bank Group, FirstRand, Absa, Nedbank, and Capitec each have a unique SWIFT code that does not typically vary across their branches in the country, there are commercial institutions with different SWIFT codes for each branch or banking service offered that require it.

A SWIFT code can also be referred to as a BIC – Business Identifier Code, Bank Identifier Code, or Bank Identification Code, and is needed alongside International Bank Account Number (IBAN) before making international payments and currency transfers.

Top 3 Best Apps for Converting Airtime to Cash in Kenya

Sometimes, life problems and the trait of forgetfulness, or all, might get us to make mistakes, such as buying airtime when you were supposed to withdraw cash at a Mpesa agent shop.

But that really should not get us to worry because there is a way to convert airtime back to cash, thanks to some innovative apps that let you change excess Safaricom airtime or Airtel credit airtime to real money.

They work like middlemen and charge a conversion fee of around 20-35% such that if you convert, say Ksh1,000 worth of airtime with an exchange company that charges 30% mobile recharge to cash efficiency rate, you will get Ksh700 returned cash.

Here is a selection of the best companies in Kenya that you can use to exchange excess airtime for cash and procedures for doing so. It works for both Safaricom and Airtel networks:

1. Olickhom app

Olickhom – Airtime to Mpesa cash conversion app is the best app for getting your money back after accidentally buying credit airtime on either Safaricom or Airtel lines because of its lowest conversion rate of 20%.

If you had Ksh1,000 in excess airtime on your phone, you will get Ksh800 cash after converting it. That’s fair. Further, the Olickhom app is more user-friendly, and the process of changing airtime to cash is simple through these steps;

Find Olickhom on Google Play and download the app to use. The onboarding process is simple>On the app’s dashboard, go to Convert Airtime to Mpesa>Choose your mobile operator (It supports Safaricom and Airtel SIMs)>Enter the airtime amount you wish to convert to money. The cash you would receive after the process is successful will show. Click ‘Proceed’ to get the funds back to your mobile wallet

2. Bambaswap

The second in this list of the best mobile applications for converting airtime to money deposited in your Mpesa or Airtel money is BambaSwap; however, it works only with Safaricom as “plans are underway to accept Airtel & Telkom airtime networks soon.”

That is one drawback. The other is it charges a conversion fee of 30%, more than 10% that of the Olickhom app. The minimum airtime amount you can convert to cash is Ksh150, and the maximum is Ksh8,000 if you visit bambaswap.com>click ‘Convert Airtime to Cash on the upper navigation menu on the homepage>in the Convert Airtime to M-Pesa Cash Instantly page, enter the amount to change to real money and your phone number.

You’ll receive a unique code. Dial it to Sambaza the excess credit airtime to receive cash to your Mpesa. It takes less than five minutes.

3. Dbs Kenya Airtime To Mpesa

Dbs Kenya app ranks third as the best app to exchange airtime for cash in Kenya because it supports all networks, Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom, and even Bonga Points.

With Dbs, you get 70% of the airtime value in cash as MPESA, and you can reverse excess credit airtime from as low as Ksh50 to Ksh50,000. It charges a 30% convenience fee.

To get started with this app, visit dbskenya.com or download the application on Play Store>On the front page, go to ‘CONVERT NOW’>Choose between Safaricom Airtime, Airtel Airtime, Telkom Airtime, and Bonga Points>Enter amount to convert and hit ‘START CONVERTING’>Submit your Mpesa or Airtel number to submit your order

You will get a confirmation message and cash to your mobile wallet almost instantly.
