Bank Short Codes and Paybill Numbers for Mpesa and Mobile Banking in Kenya

In Kenya, almost all banks have a short USSD code and a paybill number that lets their customers access financial services directly from their phones without physically visiting their branches or offices to get the same.

The dedicated code allows for managing specific bank accounts, viewing balances, withdrawing money, changing PIN or password, and getting any other related services by following a list of commands and instructions when dialed through a SIM card, especially Safaricom SIMs, used to register the bank account.

Paybill numbers enable customers to deposit money from Mpesa to banks in the country, and the dominant characteristic of these digits is that they are always easy to remember, such that one can deposit funds without having to rely on external written sources for such information. For example, the paybill number for Access Bank Kenya is 862862 – simple to recollect even under the toughest of stresses.

Bank USSDs and paybill numbers in Kenya are meant to provide convenient mobile banking services with or without the Internet. Here are some;

Sauti Sol Will Reunite at Kendrick Lamar’s Show in South Africa After ‘Last Dance’

They once sang TujiangalieSura YakoNishikeFeel My LoveShort N SweetKuliko Jana, and Rewind. Unconditionally Bae and Still The One – for Sauti Sol, their reality reflects their art.

This Kenya’s most successful boy band announced, “Don’t miss the chance to be a past of Sauti Sol’s last dance,” their last performance ever as a group at their self-curated concert SolFest, set to be on November 2, 2023, in Nairobi, to bring down the curtain of a glittering two-decade music career.

“As the clock ticks down to the much-anticipated SolFest at Uhuru Gardens, prepare for an experience that will showcase Sauti Sol’s musical odyssey over the last 20 years. The performance promises to be a true celebration of the band’s indelible mark on the Kenyan music scene,” a statement on their social media pages reads.

But in any case, they are just Insecure. Shortly after their breakup cum hiatus in early November after SolFest, the shiny four-member band, known for lyrical sharpness in their Afro-pop Rumba fused songs that cross generations, will rekindle their fraternal affection sooner on December 8 in South Africa at the Hey Neighbour Festival 2023.

Hey Neighbour Festival is a three-day music event that will take place in Pretoria at Legends Adventure Farm from December 8 – 10. It may be one of the biggest live music concerts in Southern Africa, expected to be headlined by American rapper Kendrick Lamar, the first and the only rapper with a Pulitzer Prize.

Sauti Sol’s Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, Savara Mudigi, and guitarist Polycarp Otieno will open the bill on the first day, treating the fans to special moments with their catalogue of hits and will be joined by other lead acts, electronic dance music duo The Chainsmokers, singer Khalid and Nasty C among others, the event organizer announced Friday.

The mega event will also attract superstar talent: Billboard chart-busting musical artists H.E.R. and Swedish House Mafia, including several local acts like Focalistic, singer-songwriter Shekhinah, and DJ Maphorisa. Hey Neighbour Festival tickets start at R4,199, roughly Sh32,000.

A few months ago in May, Sauti Sol started their global farewell tour and played their final concerts in some cities in the United States, UK, and Canada before capping it off in Nairobi alongside Boyz II Men in June.

Power Outage Experienced Across Kenya but KPLC Keeps Silence

Many Kenyans in different parts of the country remained without power on Friday, August 25, 2023, around 9:50 PM following a blackout that remained consistent past 11:30 PM, in what has not yet been addressed by the KPLC.

Per complaints that made KPLC and Blackout trend on X, formerly Twitter, for the better part of the evening, it is noted that total blackout is experienced in almost all counties except high-end estates of Nairobi, like Muthaiga, but other places like Komarock lacks electricity.

“We are okay here in Muthaiga North, but I can see the entire valley down there Mathare, Pangani, Parklands, and all slums along Thika Road are in darkness!!” One user said.

There are several factors that cause power interruptions, including weather, interference from animals or trees near power lines and grids, and utility practices.

By the time of reporting, KPLC had not issued an update on whether there are contingency plans put in place to ensure restoration of power in the counties in total blackout.

Earlier on, Kenya Power had said that there would be a blackout in parts of Bungoma’s Kamkuywa area, but the latest power interruption has been reported as far as Mombasa and Eldoret.

Countries Where Facebook Monetization Is Available in Africa

Of the 384 million social media users in Africa, 271 million of them accessed Facebook in 2021, the latest report from the German-based international data agency Statista shows, to evidence how the Meta platform is enmeshed in Africans’ daily lives.

Facebook is a free social networking app that allows users to connect with friends and family through private chats, sharing photos and videos, and posting updates on their profiles. It has been a critical tool in redefining relationships in the digital age, where people rely on social apps to connect.

“Our community stands for giving every person a voice, for promoting understanding, and for including everyone in the opportunities of our modern world,” Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg said after the world’s most-downloaded app of the last decade recorded a record one billion users on Monday, August 24, 2015.

Adding, “A more open and connected world is a better world. It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values.”

Speaking of economic opportunities, on which this article is focused, did you know that if you are spending hours on Facebook, you might consider monetizing your hobby even in Africa?

Making money through Facebook videos and posts in Africa

Monetizing your Facebook account will not only help you build a passive income to add to your savings bucket but also build your relationship with fans and followers through entertaining, engaging, and high-value content.

However, before you start earning through Facebook in-stream ads for video-on-demand and live videos, there are minimum requirements you must have attained on your Facebook page or profile:

Eligibility standards

* You must be 18 years and above
* Have 5,000 followers on your private Facebook profile or 10,000 followers on a Facebook page
* On your video content on your Facebook profile, have a minimum of 60,000 total minutes viewed in the last 60 days from organic followers or 600,000 viewed minutes within the same time for a Facebook page
* If you want to monetize your Facebook profile, you must have a minimum of five live videos or three if it is a Facebook page
* You must be in a country that is eligible for in-stream ads – advertisements that play on your videos before, during, or after play

Which African countries are eligible for Facebook monetization? (2023)

To earn money from the Facebook Creator program, you must be a legal resident of either Egypt or South Africa. These are the only two countries in Africa where you can monetize your FB audience or content, and it can be attributed to its high usage; Egypt ranks 10th in the list of world countries that use Facebook the most, with 42 million people in 2023 and South Africa takes position 20 with over 20 million users.

You cannot make money through Facebook in-stream ads in Kenya and other African countries because the program has not yet been rolled out.

How much does Facebook pay content creators?

Per industry insiders, Facebook compensates content creators $8 to $20 per 1,000 views, and the average CPM (Cost Per Mile) in most African countries ranges in the lows of $8 – $10 because the marketing industry is underdeveloped when comparing it with countries like USA, Australia, Canada, and the UK.

Cost Per Mile is also cost per 1,000 views. With a base CPM of $8, most Facebook creators in the category of micro-influencers – accounts with one thousand to ten thousand followers – earn an average of between $600 to $1,300 in a month.

Influencers with Facebook accounts that have over a million followers make over $5,000 per month because of the high number of views and engagement plus extras, as in they are paid to conduct other marketing campaigns in which they charge up to $80 per post.

Is TikTok Banned in Kenya?

On August 15, 2023, the Parliament of Kenya responded an appeal to ban the popular video-sharing app TikTok to limit the spread of lewd, filthy, and sex-ridden content that goes against its social community standards.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, received the petition from the Chief Executive Officer of the Bridge Connect Consultancy Bob Ndolo and read it on the floor of the House before the Members of Parliament;

“The Petitioner decries that while Tiktok has gained popularity among the youth in Kenya, the content that is being shared on the platform is inappropriate, thus promoting violence, explicit sexual content, hate speech, vulgar language, and offensive behavior which is a serious threat to the cultural and religious values of Kenya.”

In the petition, Ndolo cautioned that unless the lawmakers banish the Chinese-owned app, many learners will dip academically because of the devastating TikTok addiction that has led to a decline in reading.

Further, he said that the former Musical.ly app, now TikTok, posed a security threat to user’s data, illuminating it with a February 2019 case in the United States whereby TikTok was fined $5.7 million for failing to protect minor’s data by violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act:

What did the Parliament say about Kenya’s TikTok ban?

Kenyan MPs proved true that TikTok was being misused to spread indecent and obscene materials, but that was not “sufficient ground to petition the House to ban the app which many of parliamentarians are subscribers.”

Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa argued that TikTok is presenting the youth with excellent work opportunities, and many are making money from it.

“Tiktok and other online platforms have created an opportunity for our youths to create content and earn a living, thus resolving the challenges of unemployment,” he said.

The Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi voiced similar sentiments, pointing out that it had brought more good than harm. Hence, TikTok is not banned in Kenya.
