New Videos Emerge in Starlet Wahu’s Death

An aspiring social media model, Starlet Wahu, was fatally stabbed on the night of January 3, 2024, allegedly by a 30-year-old man identified as John Matara at a Nairobi Airbnb, Papino Apartments in South B.

The police investigators arrested John Matara at Mbagathi Hospital the following day in connection to Starlet Wahu’s murder after her body was discovered by the apartment owner, Florence Ngina, lying in a pool of blood on the floor of the room they had booked.

“I received a call from the gateman who said that the tenant (John Matara) was running away with blood-stained clothes. I rushed to the house but found it locked. We opened it using a spare key and found the body of a woman (Starlet Wahu) lying in the living room,” she told the police.

Ngina, together with two of her colleagues, went and reported the matter at South B police station in Makadara, who arrived at the scene immediately but found Wahu, 26, already dead from knife wounds to her head and right thigh in what they described as a frenzied attack.

A mobile phone, HIV self-test kit, alcohol, and bhang (marijuana) were found in the room, according to police reports. A bloody kitchen knife used in the fatal stabbing was also discovered.

Initially, the suspect told the crime detectives that he was Wahu’s boyfriend, but the victim’s brother, Victor Kanyari, a city preacher, said: “We had not seen the man before. We learned about him after her death. This is so tragic for us, the family, and even her friends. May her soul rest in peace” during her burial at their home in Kamulu, Ruai, on Saturday, January 6.

When Matara was arrested, he also had stab wounds on his stomach, and the police are still investigating whether he turned the knife on himself before he is arraigned in court to face murder charges.

Now, a video has emerged showing John Matara and Starlet Wahu arriving happily at the apartments and walking into their room. That day, Wahu wore a stylish red dress, a blue denim coat to match the suspect’s shirt, and black high heels. It reflected her amazing fashion sense as seen in her private Instagram.

Beloved Machakos School Principal Retires After 37 Years in Teaching

The retirement of long-serving teacher Indimuli Kahi was marked on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at his now-former office in Machakos School, where he was serving as the principal.

Mr. Indimuli is saying goodbye to classrooms as he retires after a whopping 37 years in the teaching profession, 34 of which he has spent managing the operations of different schools as its head.

Since 2019, he has been a principal at Machakos High School, a boys’ national school in Machakos County, about 63km from Nairobi, Kenya.

But before his transfer to Machakos School, Mr. Indimuli was the principal of Chavakali High School from 2010 to 2018 and previously held the same office at Vihiga High School and Tom Mboya Secondary School in Rusinga Island.

He said: “I may not have been the best, I may have stepped on your toes at times, but it’s all because of working to provide the best to our children and nation. As I exit the teaching service, I urge you to continue monitoring your children closely to instill discipline and God-fearing values in them.”

Until his retirement, Mr. Indimuli, who holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed.) from Kenyatta University also held various critical leadership positions in the Kenyan education sector and has been the president African Confederation of Principals and National Chairman of Kenya Secondary Schools’ Heads Association (KSSHA). He is also a council member of the International Confederation of Principals.

In his lengthy Facebook post announcing his retirement, those who know him described him as a passionate teacher whose contribution shaped the entire education sector in the country. Many wished him blessings in his golden years. Here are some comments;

Oscar Changy: “Congratulations sir for having shaped the future of so many young people in this country. For those of us whom you have left in the teaching service, we pray and hope that God will give us the same grace to accomplish this daunting task. All the best in your retirement sir. Blessings.”

Dfo Atemo: “Congratulations on such a fulfilling tenure. You were part of my intellectual growth as a student while you served as Principal of Vihiga High School. Glory to God.”

Judith Philip: “We will miss you Indimuli…hope the new principal will maintain our good school Machakos Boys ….my wish is to see you go far.”

Warigia Kamau: “We thank God for you Sir, and wish you all the best in your next phase. May God be with you always.”

Mudidi Kahi: “Congratulations, dosi, for the journey. You have been and still remain an inspiration to me. May God protect you as you take your retirement. Kudos!”

Indimuli Kahi is a recipient of the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) state award and outstanding principal shujaa of the year (2016) for an illustrious teaching career with a wider community impact.

Chief Principal Benson Manoo, formerly of Ribe Boys, will be taking over from him, and he is the new Machakos School principal.

2024 NHIF Health Insurance Costs in Kenya

First, get this in 2024: For those who never knew, NHIF is the National Health Insurance Fund, not the National Hospital Insurance Fund. Thanks!

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a government-sponsored comprehensive healthcare access program founded in 1966, and it is responsible for the public healthcare sector in Kenya.

For nearly six decades, NHIF has been fostering holistic and complementary treatments for all by guaranteeing low-cost to free access to medical services to all citizens as it seeks to implement Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.

Is NHIF mandatory in Kenya?

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) seeks to protect Kenyans against the financial consequences of ill health. Hence, it is committed to making meaningful health system reforms to ensure quality health provisions for everyone regardless of their ability to pay.

For this, its membership was not made mandatory when new laws and regulations meant to strengthen its service delivery were effected. Initially, it was a must for every Kenyan aged 18 years and above to register and contribute to NHIF as a public-funded health insurance scheme, but the Senate abolished that law.

Now, it is only mandatory for employed people since the national and the county governments will pay for the unemployed, thus exempted. Foreigners who will visit the country and plan to stay for more than 12 months are also expected to sign up and contribute to the fund.

Cost of being in NHIF

As seen, NHIF membership mainly comprises employed individuals as the major contributors to the fund. These are people from formal and pensionable employment.

However, it has a voluntary membership option for the unemployed whereby they register and pay a minimum of Ksh500 every month towards the Social Health Insurance Fund.

All employed members pay a percentage – currently, 2.75% – of their salaries to the NHIF each month, known as a contribution rate, and these are the latest;

Eighteen Universities Hit by Fake Degree Inquiry in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has banned eighteen (18) universities following a scandal over fake degrees in the country after an exposé by investigative reporter Umar Audu.

In his report, Mr. Audu, who works with the Daily Nigerian newspaper, showed growing concerns about students being mis-sold fraudulent degrees when he went undercover and acquired a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication in just under six weeks from École Supérieur de Gestion et de Technologie (ESGT-Benin University) in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

“I was not even issued an admission letter and don’t know where this school is located. All I did was get this agent, who requested 380,000 Naira as tuition fee and other expenses for the evaluation letter. I never attended the school. I never attended the school, either online or physically,” the journalist said in a recent interview. (Watch here)

The journalist went further and used the same bogus certificate to enroll at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for the mandatory one-year nation-building program, which was successful.

What puzzles him is how his name appeared on the NYSC list of genuine university graduates when he had a fake certificate, which makes him doubtful whether the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) is working based on its mandate.

Now, the National Universities Commission has responded with a crackdown on degree fraud and is conducting a fake degree inquiry, which has so far affected 18 universities, most of which are private but operating in Nigeria. Here they are;

List of universities with fake degrees in Nigeria

1. The International University, Missouri, USA, Kano and Lagos Study Centres, or any of its campuses in Nigeria
2. Columbus University, UK, operating anywhere in Nigeria
3. Tiu International University, UK, operating anywhere in Nigeria
4. Pebbles University, UK operating anywhere in Nigeria
5. London External Studies UK operating anywhere in Nigeria
6. University of Applied Sciences and Management, Port Novo, Republic of Benin, or any of its other campuses in Nigeria
7. Volta University College, Ho, Volta Region, Ghana, or any of its other campuses in Nigeria
8. Irish University Business School London, operating anywhere in Nigeria
9. University of Education, Winneba Ghana, operating anywhere in Nigeria
10. Cape Coast University, Ghana, operating anywhere in Nigeria
11. African University Cooperative Development, Cotonou, Benin Republic, operating anywhere in Nigeria
12. Pacific Western University, Denver, Colorado, Owerri Study Centre
13. Evangel University of America and Chudick Management Academic, Lagos
14. Pilgrims University operating anywhere in Nigeria
15. West African Christian University, operating anywhere in Nigeria.
16. EC-Council University, USA, Ikeja Lagos Study Centre
17. Concept College/Universities (London) Ilorin or any of its campuses in Nigeria
18. Houdegbe North American University campuses in Nigeria

On his part, Education Minister Tahir Mamman said such fake universities undermine the reputation of Nigeria’s higher learning system, and after the inquiry, they will issue a new directive that may see the West African country fail to recognize degrees from Uganda, Kenya, and Niger.

After Investigations, Police Found Stolen Fertilizer in a Church

One man faces charges after a police investigation led to the discovery of 252 bags of Government of Kenya subsidized fertilizer in a local church.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says Robert Kipng’etich Bett, aka Raphael, a farm manager employed by a Kericho-based businessman identified as Joseph Kiplangat Kete, is charged with possession of stolen property found in Grace Covenant Church in Ololunga, Narok South, where he was arrested.

As per the latest police update, this suspect was arraigned today in Milimani Law Courts and freed on a Sh500,000 cash bail pending the 1st hearing of the case on Friday, January 5, 2024.

In working the case up, the officers found that the large quantity of fertilizer was bought from North Rift by another yet-to-be-identified suspect with a criminal record and is on their radar right now as they try to solve the matter.

The goods are in the possession of the police and awaiting owners to identify them.

Airtel Money Withdrawal Charges in 2024

In October of last year, Airtel Kenya, the fastest-growing mobile service provider of Airtel Africa, made some changes to the charges for its mobile money service, Airtel Money, which will prevail even as we enter 2024.

So, following the revision and the consecutive release of a new Airtel Money Tariff Guide, the costs of sending money from Airtel Money to other networks, Mpesa and the rest, and transaction fees for cash withdrawals were most affected.

For instance, withdrawing amounts between Ksh50 and 100 was Ksh9 before, but now it is Ksh10. For Ksh101 to Ksh500, its withdrawal charge is Ksh25, up from Ksh22, a transaction fee of Ksh25 from the initial Ksh23 applies when you want to get Ksh1,000–Ksh2,500 in cash from Airtel Money agents, and so on up to Ksh250,000, the maximum you can withdraw with Airtel Kenya at Ksh300 transaction fee. Read on to find out more.

The latest Airtel Money withdrawal charges in Kenya

Here is the Airtel Money withdrawal chart for 2024;

Airtel Money withdrawal amount  New charges
Ksh1 to Ksh49 Ksh0 (Free)
Ksh50 to Ksh100 Ksh10
Ksh101 to Ksh500 Ksh25
Ksh501 to Ksh1,000 Ksh25
Ksh1,001 to Ksh1,500 Ksh25
Ksh1,501 to Ksh2,500 Ksh25
Ksh2,501 to Ksh3,500 Ksh44
Ksh3,501 to Ksh5,000 Ksh55
Ksh5,001 to Ksh7,500 Ksh70
Ksh7,501 to Ksh10,000 Ksh95
Ksh10,001 to Ksh15,000 Ksh135
Ksh15,001 to Ksh20,000 Ksh150
Ksh20,001 to Ksh25,000 Ksh160
Ksh25,001 to Ksh35,000 Ksh160
Ksh35,001 to Ksh40,000 Ksh240
Ksh40,001 to Ksh45,000 Ksh260
Ksh45,001 to Ksh50,000 Ksh270
Ksh50,001 to Ksh250,000 Ksh300

How does Airtel compare with Mpesa?

When you look at the withdrawal costs of Airtel Money and Mpesa, you will notice that Safaricom subscribers pay more to get cash than Airtel Kenya customers in that for a small tariff band of Ksh50 to Ksh100, the latter pay less by Ksh1 and save an excess of Ksh32 when they withdraw Ksh15,000 because Safaricom charges Ksh167 and Airtel Ksh135.

Transaction limits, the maximum account balance, and the daily transaction value of Ksh500,000 are similar for both networks, as well as the maximum Ksh250,000 amount per transaction, sending and withdrawing cash.

However, it costs Ksh309 to withdraw the stated amount from Mpesa shops and agent outlets, Ksh9 more than what you will be charged while using Airtel Money. Airtel says its customers save close to 40% on transaction charges.

Again, when Airtel Kenya reviewed its tariffs, it maintained free transfers within its network, regardless of the amount. “Customers using Airtel Money can send money affordably across networks. However, it is FREE when they send money to other Airtel customers. To send Money using Airtel Money, customers dial *334# & select Send Money, or they can use My Airtel App and then select Send Money.”
