Kenya Power Announces Planned Outage Monday

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) says a planned power outage will affect residential and business customers in some parts of Nyeri and Kajiado counties on Monday, January 29, 2024.

The upcoming scheduled maintenance outages in Kajiado will happen from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in the areas of Kitili Farm, Mboga Tuu, Bisil, Ngatataek, Maili Tisa, Engirkir Crushe, Kumpa and Kikora Farm. Namanga Town will also be affected by the interruption.

In Nyeri County, Muthinga, Mungaria, and Maingirano will stay without power from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Kenya Power said on X that customers in its Kaigode, Kangubiri, and Nyaithe areas will also experience a temporary interruption of electric services as they seek to maintain the electric systems that serve.

Different factors cause power interruptions, including weather, vegetation patterns, and utility practices, but these planned outages and maintenance help keep your lights on and enable Kenya Power to provide safe and reliable service.

Although the unemployment rate in Kenya is stuck at 12.7%, and hiring in the private sector has remained moribund due to the challenging economic times coupled with harsh taxing policies, the national government has announced hundreds of jobs open now through the Public Service Commission (PSC).

In an advert announcing the job openings in the public service posted by PSC this January 2024, the government will hire 675 people to fill the vacant positions across some of its state departments and ministries, many of whom will join the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services and that of Mining which has over 80 spots.

There is an incredible range of jobs from director and commissioner roles and secretaries to professions like geologists and lab technologists, and you just may be the ideal candidate to fill these slots because the government is known to provide relatively secure employment with robust bonus schemes, health insurance, and retirement benefits and you are encouraged to apply.

How to apply and join Rongo University

Thinking of applying to Rongo University? Admissions to their undergraduate degree and research programs are made through their online application portal for government-sponsored students of Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) or by physically downloading the undergraduate application form (download here) for those applying as privately sponsored students.

Download, fill in the required details, and mail it to admissions@rongovarsity.ac.ke. You must meet the entry requirements based on your KCSE performance to get admitted to pursue your desired course. The application fee is Ksh1,000 for degree programs.

Rongo University Fee Structure 2024

You are classified as either a government-sponsored or private student for the purpose of assessing tuition fees. Government-sponsored students (GSSP) get admission to universities through KUCCPS after meeting the standard Kenyan cutmark of C+ to qualify to make an application via this govt placement service.

In pursuit of higher education at universities, they usually pay less in fees compared to those in the Privately Sponsored Students Programme (PSSP), and Rongo University is no exception.

At Rongo University, the total payable fees depend on the courses. Degree programs in the Department of Arts and Business tend to be cheaper than the Bachelor of Sciences in schools like Agriculture and Science Technology and Engineering.

For instance, it costs roughly Ksh24,000 per semester to study courses like Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts in Kiswahili, but when you are a student pursuing some degrees such as Agricultural Extension and Education, Health Systems Management, or Information Science, you pay Ksh30,000 per sem.

Studying similar courses as a private student at Rongo University costs between Ksh150,000 and Ksh220,000 per academic year. This fee margin is also applicable to the first years in the new funding model.

Who is the Vice Chancellor of Rongo University?

Prof Samuel Gudu.

Professor Samuel Gudu is the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and the head of Rongo University. He was previously the Deputy VC Administration, Finance, and Planning at Moi University before he was appointed VC Rongo in 2012.

Prof Gudu has an internationally recognized authority in the areas of agriculture and biology and holds a PhD in Plant Genetics and Molecular Biology from Canada’s University of Guelph.

He is a distinguished public servant in the Kenyan university and public sector at large and was among the members of the special task force established to investigate the effects of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) on the citizens’ health and environment.

All Paid HELB Batch Numbers So Far

Last week, KBC reported that the government had released Ksh14.4 billion to HELB, the Higher Education Loans Board, for disbursement to universities and TVET accounts as scholarship awards to first years and loans to continuing students.

Since then, HELB has been actively sending money to these institutions, and the tuition fees section of HELB beneficiaries in the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal is moving from Allocated to Disbursement in Progress, and for some, with earlier approved batch numbers, have been paid.

What is a batch number example in HELB?

Well, HELB uses the batch code system to keep track of successful HELB applicants set to receive money for tuition and upkeep to keep track of all paid and pending accounts for efficiency.

A typical HELB batch number would be similar to 5113 or 5050. It is four numbered and awarded in cohorts, not individually, and not based on where students learn but on the time of loan approval.

From today, January 22, 2024, HELB will be disbursing funds to students’ accounts with batch numbers such as 5310 and 5308, and some of them have been told to check their bank accounts and Mpesa Surepay in 48-72 hours.

How to Send Money From Mpesa to Airtel Money

Each day, more and more people in Kenya are taking advantage of the convenience of mobile money services, especially Mpesa, the most popular and successful of these platforms, with over 30 million users every month, according to Safaricom, Mpesa’s owner and operator.

The other big Mpesa alternative is Airtel Money. Mpesa and Airtel Money services allow customers to send and receive money from anywhere in the world.

These two mobile payment solutions also have other similar features. You can recharge your SIM card using Mpesa and Airtel Money, and you can deposit or withdraw cash from their agents, who are distributed countrywide.

Further, you can use them for business purposes, such as paying for goods in a shop through Mpesa till numbers or directly sending money to service providers if it is their preferred mode of payment.

But despite these similarities, there are differences too, for the most part in how you operate them to send money correctly and efficiently. Today, we see the ways of moving funds from Mpesa to Airtel Money easily and instantly:

Can you use Mpesa to transfer money to Airtel Money?

Yes, Mpesa allows customers to send money instantly to any registered Airtel Money user in Kenya, thanks to the M-PESA Tuma Popote service to support sending and receiving money across networks.

Currently, there are two ways of sending money from Safaricom to Airtel. These are;

Method I: Sending money from Mpesa to Aitel Money using USSD

To initiate a Mpesa transfer to send funds to an Airtel Money account, use *334# in the following simple steps;

1. From your Safaricom SIM, dial *334# to access the Mpesa USSD menu
2. Go to Option 1 ‘Send Money’
3. Choose ‘Send to other Network’
4. Enter the recipient number and proceed
5. Enter the amount to send
6. Confirm the recipient’s details and confirm the transaction

The Airtel Money user will receive the cash in their mobile wallet instantly.

Method II: Sending money from Mpesa to Airtel Money using app

Did you know you can send money from Mpesa to Airtel Money using the Mpesa app? It is here, and the app is available for download on major application marketplaces like Play Store and Apple Store for iPhone users.

Get started by downloading the app on your phone and signing in using your Safaricom number. Open it using your Mpesa PIN for access, and click the ‘SEND AND REQUEST’ icon in green on the homepage. Navigate to ‘ANOTHER NETWORK’ and enter the Airtel number to receive the funds. Easy!

Is it free?

Yes, but only when sending amounts of Ksh100 and below. Otherwise, Mpesa to Airtel Money transfers are subject to a fee, a transaction charge that depends on the amount you are sending across the mobile networks.

Transferring Ksh1,000 will cost you Ksh23, Ksh53 for Ksh2,501 to Ksh3,500, Ksh100 when you send amounts between Ksh 10,001 and Ksh15,000, and so on.

Kisumu Polytechnic Courses, Fees and Eligibility in 2024

Kisumu Polytechnic is charting a path to becoming Kenya’s premier coeducational public polytechnic. Its educational programs, founded on research-intensive science and technology, enable students to succeed in growing 21st-century career fields.

As the name suggests, Kisumu Polytechnic is situated in the populous city of Kisumu along Technology Road, next to Kisumu Stadium. It began as a technical secondary school in the late 1960s. It was upgraded to a Technical Training Institute by the Ministry of Education in 1988, later becoming Kisumu National Polytechnic on June 21, 1997, before a name change to reflect the new status in 2014.

How many students does Kisumu Polytechnic have?

Currently, according to its head, Chief Principal Catherine Kelonye, Kisumu National Polytechnic is a vibrant institution with a total enrollment of ten thousand and forty-one (10,041) trainees, consisting of six thousand and eighty-eight (6,088) males and three thousand nine hundred and fifty three (3,953) females.

The number of students enrolled in Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) courses is 8,156, of which 2,962 are female and the remainder, 5,194 are male.

Mrs. Kelonye, a holder of a Masters in Education, has been the Chief Principal of Kisumu Polytechnic since 2020 after being transferred from Sigalagala, where she had served from 2010.

Namibians Will Get a Holiday if They Win Afcon – President Geingob

The Africa Cup of Nations AFCON is underway, and Namibia has won its opener thanks to a late goal by Deon Kavendji Hotto in the 88th minute of their first match against Tunisia on Tuesday.

Namibia’s national football team, the Brave Warriors, beat Tunisia 1-0 to register the biggest shock result in African football going by Fifa rankings, and President Hage Geingob declared himself the “happiest Namibian” after the stunning win over France beaters in the past World Cup.

Taking to X, President Geingob has promised to give Namibians a free holiday to celebrate their football team if they win this AFCON 2023/2024 edition.

“Let’s win the Cup, and I will get back to you on adding another public holiday,” he wrote.

Tunisia was in the pole position to win this match against the Brave Warriors as one of the greatest African football teams, ranking 28th in the Fifa rankings, 87 steps higher than the southern African country, which is 115.

Tunisia and Namibia are in the AFCON Group E with Mali and South Africa. At the moment, Mali leads the Group after beating South Africa 2-0;
